How to Prepare for Your MRI

To ensure the best results from your MRI, proper preparation is essential. In this guide, we’ll provide you with comprehensive steps to help you prepare for your MRI, making the process comfortable and effective.

Before The MRI

Consultation and Medical History

  • Discuss your medical history, including any implants, allergies, or past surgeries, with your doctor before scheduling the MRI.
  • Inform your doctor if you’re pregnant, as MRI scans are generally avoided during pregnancy unless deemed necessary.

Clothing and Accessories

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing without metal components. Some facilities might provide gowns for the procedure.
  • Remove jewelry, watches, hairpins, and any other metal items to avoid interference with the MRI’s magnetic field.

Allergies and Contrast Dye

  • If contrast dye is required for your MRI, inform your doctor about any allergies, particularly those related to gadolinium-based contrast agents.
  • Your doctor might prescribe medications to minimize potential allergic reactions.

Day of the MRI

Food and Drink

  • Follow any dietary instructions provided by your doctor or the MRI facility, especially if you’re having an abdominal or pelvic MRI.
  • Some MRI scans might require fasting for a specific duration before the procedure.

Medications

  • Consult your doctor about taking regular medications on the day of the MRI. Certain medications might need to be adjusted or temporarily stopped.

Anxiety and Claustrophobia

  • If you’re anxious or claustrophobic, inform your doctor before the procedure. They might offer relaxation techniques or, in some cases, mild sedation.

During the MRI

Arrival and Timing

  • Arrive at the MRI facility on time to complete any necessary paperwork and discuss any last-minute concerns with the staff.

Clothing Change

  • Depending on the area being scanned, you might need to change into a hospital gown provided by the facility.

Stay Still and Relaxed

  • Follow the instructions given by the MRI technologist carefully. Remaining still during the scan ensures clear and accurate images.
  • If you’re uncomfortable, you can communicate with the technologist through an intercom system.

After the MRI

Resuming Normal Activities

  • After the MRI, you can generally resume your regular activities and diet unless told otherwise by your doctor or the technologist.
  • Contrast dye used in some MRI scans usually doesn’t require any special precautions afterward.

Consultation and Results

  • Your doctor will review the MRI images and provide you with the results. Discuss any concerns or questions you have during your follow-up appointment.
