How to Prepare for Your Digital X-Ray

Proper preparation can help ensure the accuracy and quality of your digital X-ray results. In this guide, we’ll provide you with essential steps to help you prepare for your digital X-ray, making the process seamless and effective.

Before The Digital X-ray

Appointment Scheduling

  • Schedule your digital X-ray appointment as recommended by your healthcare provider.
  • Inform the facility about any medical conditions, allergies, or previous imaging procedures you’ve had.

Clothing and Accessories

  • Wear comfortable clothing that’s easy to remove and doesn’t have any metal components, such as zippers or buttons, which could interfere with the X-ray image.
  • Depending on the area being examined, you might be asked to change into a hospital gown.

  • Inform the X-ray technologist if you’re pregnant or suspect you might be pregnant. Although X-rays use a low dose of radiation, precautions might be necessary.

Hygiene and Skincare

  • Ensure the area being examined is clean and free from lotions, creams, or oils that might interfere with the X-ray image.
  • If you’ve had prior X-rays, provide the technologist with information about previous procedures to aid in accurate comparisons.

Jewelry and Accessories

  • Remove any jewelry, watches, piercings, or other metal accessories from the area being examined.

Arrival and Check-in

  • Arrive at the X-ray facility on time to complete any necessary paperwork and check-in procedures.

Positioning and Stillness

  • Follow the instructions provided by the X-ray technologist for proper positioning on the examination table.
  • Hold still during the brief X-ray exposure to ensure clear and accurate images.

Digital X-ray Process

  • The X-ray technologist will position the X-ray machine and may place a protective lead apron on parts of your body not being imaged.
  • You might be asked to hold your breath briefly while the X-ray is taken.

Resuming Activities

  • After the digital X-ray, you can immediately resume your normal activities, including eating, drinking, and exercising.

Consultation and Results

  • Your healthcare provider will review the digital X-ray images and discuss the results with you during a follow-up appointment.
  • Depending on the findings, further steps or treatments will be recommended.
